Drawbot

A Drawbot is a simple robot for drawing graffiti on a wall or paper.

I started to look at this as a stepping stone on my journey to make a painting robot (see paint-o-matic).

As it turns out, in it self it’s an amazingly interesting and fun exploration.

Here’s my journal of activity.

Wireless for robotics

Wireless for robotics

Yesterday I received this cool router which will connect wirelessly to another router and then present an Ethernet port to my BeagleBone or other robotic controller. This looks very promising since the packaging is pretty small. The antenna is in the plastic cabinet but I can solder it on the board by the looks...

DIY motor for drawing robot

DIY motor for drawing robot

Last Wednesday at ModLab I got to see the progress that Doug is making on his motors! These motors are for a drawing robot experiment. The story is that he’s making some controllers for quad copter motors so he wants to dabble with motors and motor controllers in a less demanding environment for a...

Laser cut motors

Laser cut motors

I just made some parts for my friend Doug who is making laser cut motors for his own drawing robot! I finally found a good software path for transferring content to the machine. Before it was very slow to prepare the files for cutting. Now it’s as easy as pie. The exhaust system keeps the environment...

Small drawbot pen holder installed.

Small drawbot pen holder installed.

I managed to get the new gondola design installed on the baby sized drawbot. I already see a lot of problems. For instance I could mount the pen at the top of the gondola instead of the bottom. And have the ballast towards the problem. Also the elastic attachment point could be better. Either...

New pen-holder for Baby Drew

New pen-holder for Baby Drew

I’ve been wanting a smaller gondola for smaller machines. Today I made this one which is now ready for testing. The pen clamp is a telescoping system rather than a clothespin like clamp on the gondola for larger machines. I need to work on the elastic band attachment a bit and I don’t have...

DiY Spirograph

DiY Spirograph

I was thinking about Spirographs from childhood and I decided to make one. I bring you: “SquigglyGraph”! This is 1/8th” extruded acrylic. The drawing holes are 3/64″ radius and the gears were made with the WoodGears.ca gear program. I used Google Sketchup and Inkscape to do the rest of the CAD work and cut...
